he purpose of this memorial is to honor those who served with the US Army Air Corp's 509th Composite Group during WW2. This group was created in 1944 and tasked with the operational deployment of nuclear weapons. It conducted the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in August 1945. This group consisted of the following: 393rd Bombardment Squadron, 390th Air Service Group, 603rd Air Engineering Squadron, 1027th Air Materiel Squadron, 320th Troop Carrier Squadron, 1395th Military Police Company, and the 1stt Ordnance Squadron. In total, the 509th came to include 225 officers and enlisted 1542 men to whom this memorial is dedicated to.
