Gazette Information: GAZETTE ISSUE 30122, VICTORIA CROSS,: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/30122/supplements/5704. His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Victoria Cross to the undermentioned:- No. 53730 Lance-Serjeant Ellis Welwood Sifton, late 18th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. On 9th April 1917 at Neuville-St-Vaast, France, during the attack in enemy trenches Serjeant Sifton's company was held up by machine-gun fire which inflicted many casualties. Having located the gun he charged it single-handed, killing all the crew. A small enemy party advanced down the trench, but he succeeded in keeping these off till our men had gained the position. In carrying out this gallant act he was killed, but his conspicuous valour undoubtedly saved many lives and contributed largely to the success of the operation.
