Gazette Information: GAZETTE ISSUE 30122, VICTORIA CROSS,: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issues/30122/supplement/5702. His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Victoria Cross to the undermentioned:- Captain Thain Wendell MacDowell, D.S.O., Canadian Infantry Battalion. For most conspicuous bravery and indomitable resolution, during the period 9th – 13th April 1917 at Vimy Ridge, France, in face of heavy machine-gun and shell fire. By his initiative and courage this officer, with the assistance of two runners, was enabled, in the face of great difficulties, to capture two machine-guns, besides two officers and seventy-five men. Although wounded in the hand, he continued for five days to hold the position gained, in spite of heavy shell fire, until eventually relieved by his battalion.
