Sergeant Smith was a member of Battery C, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. While serving as a forward observer, he was killed by enemy mortars on Hill 867 "Heartbreak Ridge", North Korea on October 7, 1951. Sergeant Smith was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
