On February 10, 2006, the Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO, now DPAA) identified the remains of Second Lieutenant Arthur C. Armacost III, missing from World War II.

Second Lieutenant Armacost entered the U.S. Army Air Forces from Ohio and served in the 63rd Bombardment Squadron, 43rd Bombardment Group (Heavy). On November 4, 1943, he was the copilot of a B-24D Liberator (serial number 42-40972) that took off from Dobodura, New Guinea for an armed reconnaissance mission over the Bismark Sea. The Liberator successfully bombed a Japanese convoy but crashed for unknown reasons in the Morobe Province of New Guinea afterward. 2LT Armacost and the other eight crew members were killed in the crash. In 2002, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command was notified that a local official had located the Liberator’s wreckage. A U.S. team excavated the site in 2003 and recovered personal effects and human remains that were taken to the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory where specialists used modern forensic tools to identify the remains of 2LT Armacost.
