Description
After the defeat of the CONFEDERACY, the returning soldiers, this was a POW, four times, in three different camps, came home to an occupied Portsmouth, VA, a dying wife and children that didn't recognize him. CONFEDERATES, were denied the right to work, so therefore, they and their families would surely die.The CONFEDERATES, who though tried to survive the "brutal occupation" of the NORTHERN AGRESSORS, found in most cases it was impossible, and this one like many had to go to the cities to hope to find work, and seek any possible fortune. John brought, his ill wife and small children with him to Washington DC, where he apparently had two more "Twins" one my GreatGrandfather John M. LEWIS. He was lucky and made a living and died in DC, but always wished to return to Virginia,so it seem from reading his only book "Recollections from 1860 to 1865", published by PEAKE AND CO., Washington DC 1895.
