George was the son of George and Mary Eliza (Lofley) Haywood. He came to this country when he was eight years of age and lived in and around Canton, Fulton County, Illinois.
George married Minnie D. Stought on September 1, 1901 in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois.

In the Spanish American War, Mr. Haywood first enlisted with Company M, Fifth Illinois Regiment, from which he was discharged in 1898. He reenlisted in 1899 with Company E., 45th Regiment of the United States Volunteers and was discharged in 1901.

Following discharge, he became active as a member of the Allie C. Post Camp 104, Spanish American War Veterans.

Mr. Haywood was a member of Lewiston lodge, AF and AM; a member and past officer of Canton chapter, Royal Arch Masons; past officer of the Canton council, Royal and Select Masters; past commander of Damascus Commandry, Havana Knights Templar, and past patron of Lewiston O.E.S.

Other offices he held include W. of S. of the Canton White Shrine of Jerusalem and past Royal Patron of The Order of The Amaranth. He was also a member of the Lewiston Christian church.
