p. 52 - …."brought to Otto's barn with agruesome battlefield wound: a fractured femur protruding two or three inches from his left leg. Because Loveland was too weakfrom blood loss and expoure, surgeons would not dare risk performing anamputation, probably necessary to save the twenty-three year old soldier's life. "

p. 54 - …."_ Loveland was transferred to the Reformed Church on October 5…..In his casebook, Surgeon McDonnell recorded thattheyoung soldier also suffered from bedsores and that flies swarmed his wounds. Given a bunk near the vestibule, Loveland soon gained enough strength for McDonnell to amputate the leg on the morning of October 7. 'Cost more blood than I could have wished in the operation & the patient sank quite low after the removal of the limb & was long in coming from the influence of chloroform', the surgeon wrote. But Loveland had a 'good pulse, good color,' and the 'case appeaars in every way promising'"_

p. 55 - …."in the morning more than a week after the operation….a gusher of blood spurted tow or three feet in the air…the result of Loveland's leg artery disintegrating. ….Prepared for the inevitable, Loveland told….what to tell his wife Anna, and gave directions for what to do with his few personal belongings."

p. 55 - "His body placed in acoffinmade fromboards found nearthechurch, Loveland was buried in a nearby apple orchard. After the Civil War his remains were removed to Antietam National Cemetery, where he lies today under gravestone No. 1099, a half mile up the road from where he died."
