**Sylvester Roach was born in 1927 in Burdette Township, Hand County, SD. Sylvester was one of nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Roach. Before he entered the service, Sylvester farmed with his father near Miller. **

**Sylvester enlisted in the Army in August 1944 at the age of eighteen. He was sent overseas on January 8, 1945, to the Pacific theater of operations. **

**Private Sylvester Roach, 302nd Infantry, 94th Infantry Division, was killed in action on February 19, 1945, in Germany. He was first declared missing and was later confirmed as killed in action. **

A memorial mass was held at the Catholic Church in Zell for PFC Roach. Father Durken had charge of the service. PFC Sylvester Roach is buried at Plot B, Row 5, Grave 48, at Luxembourg American Cemetery, Luxembourg City, Luexmbourg.

He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
