Robert Ralph Mericle was born on June 4, 1919, in Salem, South Dakota. Robert was the son of Edward F. Mericle and Esther M. Mericle. There is no evidence of any brothers or sisters. Robert was going to school when he registered for the military in Salem, South Dakota.

During the 6 months prior to entry into active service, Robert attended The South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City, South Dakota. He was registered as a student at the school from May 12, 1941 to June 10, 1941 and September 2, 1941 to November 12, 1941. He was employed by the Campbell Funeral Home in Rapid City, South Dakota. His dates of employment were June 10, 1941 to September 2, 1941.

Second Lieutenant Mericle died in service on February 16, 1943, in St. Nazaire, France while engaged in an operational mission in the European area. The date and place of burial are not known.

Second Lieutenant Robert R. Mericle will always be loved and remembered. He gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country.
