ernando was born to Rachel (Harvey) and Jesse Smith who farmed in the early years of White River township, Hamilton county, Indiana. Besides farming and raising stock, Fernando was a religious man, likely from the influence of his Quaker mother. He married Cyrena McWilliams and began his own farm in bordering Madison county. On Sundays he taught various church classes even becoming a superintendent for the area.
