dam Bighaus, was born on February 9, 1897, in Herried, South Dakota, of Russian parents. He was employed as a clerk when he registered for the military at McLean County, North Dakota. Adam, age 21, service #475703, was inducted into the U.S Army on 27 April 1918, during World War I. From his home in Dogden, North Dakota, he was sent to the Jefferson Barracks in Montana. First, he was assigned to Company E, 30th engineers. Later he was assigned to Company F, 1st Gas Regiment. In June of 1918, Adam was sent overseas to Brest, Finistere, Bretagne, France where he saw offensive engagements at St. Mihiel and Meuse Argonne. His brother, Peter Bighouse, was also at these locations. On 24 February 1919, Private Adam was returned to the U.S. aboard the U.S.S. Celtic, arriving in New York. He was discharged from service at Camp Dodge. After the war, he made a living as a merchant, married and raised his step-children as his own. He saw tough times when his business burned to the ground; but he rebuilt and was successful. He saw sorrow when 2 of his brothers and his parents died. He was involved in his community and enjoyed visiting with his siblings. Adam was a handsome man with black curly hair and gray eyes. Adam described himself as being 5' 6" tall and having a stocky build. He has often been remembered as humorous, helpful, kind and generous. He died at age 63 and is buried at Butte Cemetery, in Butte, ND.
