Stephen Caldwell Millett, son of Rev. Stephen Caldwell and Sarah Fuller (Appleton) Millett was born in Jamesville, Onondaga County, New York on 8 May 1840 and died in Columbia, South Carolina on 26 Feb. 1874 in his 35th year.

He married in New York City at the Church of the Ascension on 16 Dec. 1869 to Mary Emma Child, born in St. Louis, Missouri on the 23 Apr. 1849 and lived at Stormfield, Redding County, Connecticut, the daughter of Alonzo Child by his wife, Mary the daughter of James and Mary (Wallace) Goodrich.

Mr. Millett, when a boy left his father's home in Beloit to come to New York. Here he resided with his uncle, Daniel Fuller Appleton and entered the employ of the latter's firm, Robbins and Appleton, agents for the American Watch Company. At the beginning of the Civil war, Mr. Millett volunteered his services in the 71st Regiment. He soon rose to lieutenancy and was mustered out at the end of the war. Alto his health was shattered due to his service, he became interested in building a railroad from Augusta, Georgia to Port Royal, South Carolina and removed to Beauford in the latter state to superintend the project. Against terrific odds he secured the needed capital and legislative backing and a new railroad was accomplished, linking the inter land with the deep harbor at Port Royal. Where others failed, he achieved, for by sheer force of will, energy and foresight this project was attained becoming a very real monument to his endeavors. It has been stated that he was a brilliant conversationalist of unquestionable integrity and was of great charity to all.
