Captain Stewart had an exceptionally honorable career as a patriot, and soldier of the republic. On Sept 4, 1862, he enlisted as a volunteer in the 95th Illinois volunteer infantry, in which he served as captain until August 1865, completing the full period of his enlistment several months after the surrender of Lee at Appomattox. He participated in the siege of Vicksburg, the Red River expedition, the Battles of Champion Hills, Guntown, Spanish Fort, Fort Blakely, in the capture of Mobile, the second battle of Nashville and many skirmishes. At the battle of Guntown he was severely wounded by being shot through both legs, and after spending three months on a furlough, he rejoined his regiment, serving until honorably discharged. He was an active participant in all campaigns and battles in which his regiment was engaged except while disabled by the wounds mentioned. – Excerpt from The Woodstock Sentinel 1907 Woodstock, McHenry County, Illinois
