Chief of Operations in CIA’s clandestine service; in 1952, he contracted polio while traveling in Asia on agency business. He returned to duty in 1953 as inspector general. He spent the rest of his career in a wheelchair.
Awards
Mr. Kirkpatrick was a 1964 recipient of the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service, the highest service honor given to civilians. He also was awarded the CIA's Distinguished Intelligence Medal.
