resident of Clinton Town, Dutchess County, New York, Othenial D. Smith enlisted tn the month of February, 1777 and served 3 years "in the Massachussets line of the army of the Revolution" in a company commanded by Captain Thomas Seward in Colonel John Crane's Regiment of Artillery. He was present at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778 and was discharged at West Point at the end of his time of service.
